Chapter 5: Tenebrae

Part 6: Exodus

With the death of the Pharaoh's first-born son, Moses was called back to the court and given the permission to take the slaves and leave the land of Egypt for once and for all.

Moses, Aaron, their sister, and the battered nation of Israel traveled towards the sea. At the point where Egypt met the Sinai desert, they stopped and looked on towards the sea. Aaron shook his head, "Moses, I think that we have taken the wrong route. We cannot cross from here. We must retrace our footsteps and take the road to Sinai."

Moses turned around and looked at the distance... He could see a dust storm far away. He narrowed his eyes as he examined the situation. "No. They are behind us, knowing Ramesis; he's probably changed his mind and is out to kill us all... Besides, I have a feeling that we can get through." Meriam intervened, "The sea is very deep, brother, most of us will drown if we try to swim it. And what about the children?" With a smile of comfort, he replied with humility and a certain grace, "Trust in God, my sister."

As they approached The Sea of Reeds, Moses wielded his staff. "What are you going to do with that?" Meriam asked.

"Jethro told me that he did not know everything that this staff is capable of doing. Something tells me that it has the power to get us through." He started to walk towards the sea with stalwart resolve. Behind him, the Hebrews looked at him strangely as he waded to the sea. Moses said a prayer aloud. "Amen." Some of the people said. Aaron looked at them quizzically then turned back at Moses. "Brother, are..."

Suddenly everyone gasped as they saw the unbelievable scene of a wide arc of pure shadow shoot from the rod towards the sea, parting it in half as if it were clouds of steam. Aaron motioned for the people to move. The opening was wide enough for several people to be walking side by side and it stretched on until the side of Sinai. Aaron and his sister led the children of Israel as Moses stood there and sustained the energy concentration, but he did not know how much time they had before the Pharaoh and his chariots would arrive.

Two hours had passed and it seemed that most had made it across safely or were more than halfway across. Moses was getting drained from concentrating the dispersion of shadow onto the water, but he had to keep it steady unless he wanted to let the sea swallow his people. He turned around, and noticed that the dust was getting closer and closer. He thought he could see Ramesis at the head of the chariot legion, followed by his commanders and the executioners, ready to slaughter the Hebrews on sight. Moses started to walk towards the parted sea. As he did, he started hearing the thundering hooves of the chariots and the screams of the generals. Moses looked up and noticed that from far away, there were still dozens of women and children who were too slow to make it across quickly enough. He decided to hold the staff carefully and run through the water, being careful not to disrupt the shadow force-field. Meriam, from far away was shouting at him, "Come on! They are behind you! Run!" Moses ran as fast as he could. And realized that the force-field had a residue tailing arc behind him. Apparently the residue formed due to the amount of time that he had spent holding the energy field operational. He didn't know how far back it extended but knew that if it was too far back, then the chariots would be able to catch up to Moses and slaughter him, drowning him and whoever's still in the path who hasn't reached the other side.

As he ran through, the chariots of the Pharaoh would inevitably be at the mouth of the waterfront within seconds, they traveled faster than he thought. Moses ran as fast as he could, but he suddenly started to wade on an extremely soggy bog. He couldn't move fast enough. He looked behind him and could see the chariots carefully descending the sea bed and traveling towards them. He looked ahead and could see a glimpse of the last few people leaving the sea bed. Moses looked at his rod and sighed. Suddenly, he ceased his concentration as he shut his eyes and allowed the water to engulf him.

As if angry from the disruption, the waves crashed onto each other, breaking the chariots in half and instantly drowning Pharaoh and his people. "I BELIEVE! I BELIEVE!" Pharaoh screamed as he gurgled and swilled in the angry waters. Needless to say, his repentance was a little too late.

As the sea returned to normalcy, Meriam cried on the other side, shielded by her brother Aaron. Aaron comforted her, but in a way, he himself needed comforting. His own brother whom he had never had shared the time he wished to share with, was now gone forever.

Suddenly, a man walked out of the sea and stood up. He brushed his clothes as if he fell on dusty ground and placed his staff back onto his belt. Aaron and Meriam laughed and hugged their brother.

"You made it!" She screamed.

He smiled and started to walk towards the people. "On to Mount Herob." He said as he continued to lead on the people. Moses looked back at the sea and said, "Thank you for protecting me, Emmanuel.”

Moses smiled as he corrected himself: "Aryel."
